File Syncing Basics

What is file synchronization?

When you synchronize your files, you make one or more files identical at the same point in time of synchronization. This ensures that every user who accesses a shared file sees the most up-to-date version, no matter where they are or what device they are using. This essentially mitigates the impact of latency and network bandwidth since the most recently updated file is locally available everywhere and at all times. There is no need to hop onto your network to find the latest update.

Why is file syncing important to my business?

In today's digital era, data access reliability and efficiency are essential. Automating file management processes through the syncing of files helps users share files between workers at separate offices, distribute files to remote sites, and implement disaster recovery plans.

Synchronizing your folders can enable business efficiency and continuity through:

  • Redundancy
  • Availability
  • Recovery
  • Sharing
  • Distribution

File Synchronization vs. File Replication

There’s a nuanced difference between these two important features that you should know about:

File synchronization is akin to bi-directional or multi-directional replication; meaning there is no source file.

File replication denotes a source file, and a replica is being made of that source file and copied to one or more destinations.

How does file replicating help me?

Multi-directional replication is especially useful when you need to share files between multiple machines, whether servers, desktops, or laptops.

Suppose you synchronize files between three servers (A, B, and C). When a file is updated on Server A, that update is copied to B and C. This is also true if the file is updated on Server C; those changes are then copied to A and B. Hence, multi-directional replication occurs.
