What is file archiving?

File archiving software manages file versions as they change. It involves storing backup copies elsewhere for recovery. Archives can be stored in:

Server storage
Cloud blob storage

File archiving can run on a scheduled clock basis or continuously. A continuous file archiving solution can be powerful. It complements existing backup solutions like tape.

Processing continually closes gaps in the backup window. That's when a file version may not make it to tape or an image. Document archiving can also be a standalone, versioned backup for your user files.

How does file archiving software work?

The process starts with setting interval rules. An interval is a time period. Intervals determine the number of file versions to retain in different time periods.

Archive rules are very flexible. They can be set in many ways depending on user needs. Data archiving will evenly spread versions over a set interval. This prevents file history gaps. For example, an interval set to keep 7 versions in a week will space those versions out over the specified time. If you save more than 7 versions in that time, the old versions will carry over to the next interval.

When a file version is old enough to be outside set archive intervals, it's removed from the archive.
