SureSync Support : SureSync 4.1 Required Components

This document applies to SureSync 4.

SureSync 4.1 runs on Windows 2003, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0 (SP6 or later), Windows ME, and Windows 98. Windows 95 is no longer supported. It can synchronize files hosted by any operating system if those files can be accessed from these operating systems through a mapped drive or UNC path. It can also synchronize using the FTP protocol.

When the SPIAgent option is used by SureSync and ArchiveSync, the computers do not need to be in trusted domains. Encrypted communication is possible via the Internet.

SureSync takes advantage of current Microsoft technologies. Some of these features may not be present in your operating system, depending on its version. Use the links below, if necessary, to upgrade your system to provide the latest technology.

Microsoft Windows Installer

In order to install SureSync you need the Windows Installer. Most versions of Windows will already have this installed, but if the install informs you that you need to install it, you may download the latest version here for Windows 98/ME, or here for Windows NT/2000. There should never be a need to install it on Windows XP or later systems.

MDAC 2.71 and Jet 4.0 SP6 Required

The machine running a full install of SureSync requires MDAC version 2.71 or later to provide database access. Jet 4.0 Service Pack 6 or newer is also required. These components are not needed for a "SPIAgent Only" install. Following the instructions below to get the proper versions, depending on your operating system. The Setup program will warn you if your components are missing or not current.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

You must have Internet Explorer version 4.01 or later installed. You can download the latest version from here. Windows 2000 and later systems always have Internet Explorer preinstalled.

SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE)

If you want to use a SQL Server database on a desktop machine you will need to have the SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE) installed. You can use a SQL Server machine without installing MSDE. You cannot use versions of SQL Server prior to SQL Server 2000.

To download and install MSDE please do the following:

  1. Click here to obtain the most recent components. Under "Download" on the right side select your language and click "Go".
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and download "sql2kdesksp3.exe" which is the MSDE portion of SQL.
  3. Double click on "sql2kdesksp3.exe" to extract the components to a folder on your hard drive. This directory is "C:\sql2ksp3" by default.
  4. Open a command prompt and change directories to the "C:\sql2ksp3" directory.
  5. Enter the following command (without the {} symbols) {setup SAPWD="passwordofyourchoicehere"} to install MSDE. Further details can be obtained in the "readme.htm" included with the downloaded package.

Click here to visit Microsoft's SQL download page. This page contains the latest service packs and security updates for your SQL Server or MDSE software. Note that MSDE uses the same service packs as SQL Server 2000.
