Consolidating File Servers with MigratePro

Storage requirements have exploded in recent years as network users consume resources to store their critical files. This storage explosion has resulted in some network environments where file shares are scattered across multiple file servers as network administrators attempt to find available hard drive space.  This can result in an environment which is difficult to manage and difficult for users to navigate.

Consolidating file servers in a network environment has a number of benefits including:

  • A reduction in network management; fewer servers means less management overhead
  • A reduction of power and heat generated in the server room
  • A simplified network infrastructure which can make it easier for users to locate resources

Consolidation of file servers can take on two different forms:

  • Each server has separate shares and all of these shares can be consolidated down to reside on one larger file server
  • Multiple servers have shares with the same name and somewhat different content. This situation can be a real headache to deal with as the network administrator attempts to figure out which files to keep

Thankfully, MigratePro provides an easy-to-use and effective solution for dealing with both types of consolidation jobs. MigratePro will migrate shares, the files within the shares, share permissions, share settings, local users, local groups, NTFS file security, and NTFS file compression settings in an automated manner making a time consuming and frustrating task quick, easy, and error free.

In the scenario where each server has its own collection of shares, MigratePro can be configured with standard Migrate rules to migrate those file shares from the multiple old machines to a single new file server. In this situation, each share would be copied to a folder on the new machine with the same folder name as the old machine. The end result is a collection of shares on the new machine which contain all of the files, security and other settings from the old hardware.

In the second scenario, where two or more shares need to be consolidated down into a single destination share, the Migrate Merge rule would be used. This powerful rule allows for multiple source directories to be effortlessly merged into a single destination directory.  This type of merge can be an extremely time consuming and error prone process when done manually. With MigratePro, the process becomes as simple as completing a built-in wizard.

With MigratePro, consolidating file servers becomes an easy proposition for companies looking to simplify their network infrastructure, reduce costs, and reduce power consumption.

SureSync Does That? - Filter Files by Size for Great Control of Bandwidth and Speed

Filter by file sizes with schedules on the options tab. Filter files by size with real-time monitors by adding an interval on the intervals tab.

Schedules: Filter files by size on the options tab of a schedule. (Click image above to enlarge) Monitors: When running real-time monitors, you can filter files by size on the intervals tab and clicking on the "Add" button. (Click image above to enlarge)

You can process files in a Schedule or a Real-Time Monitor filtering on file sizes. This can be very useful for controlling synchronization bandwidth usage and speed. For example, you can configure a Real-Time Monitor to process files 10MB or smaller during business hours and then all files larger than 10MB after hours. This is configured on the Intervals tab of a Real-Time Monitor. Similar settings for a Schedule can be found on the Options tab. Pressing F1 on these tabs will provide detailed help.
