Enhance Disaster Recovery with SureSync

Protecting critical data is a top responsibility of any information technology department. Tape backup and drive image technologies represent part of the solution. These tools provide long-term storage and bare metal restore capabilities. However, backups and drive images represent only part of the solution. With those solutions in place, how do you protect critical files in between backups? How do you ensure that the latest versions of critical files are readily available for rapid recovery? SureSync is the answer.

SureSync’s flexible file synchronization and replication engine can be used for a number of different purposes. One of the most common is offsite disaster recovery. With SureSync, you can automatically copy critical files to an offsite server to be recovered later. Schedules and Real-Time Monitors can both be used for this purpose. A combination of the two is often optimal. The goal is to copy critical user data and other data such as SQL and Exchange backup files to a remote location during the business day. If a failure occurs, you have access to the files on the remote server. This additional layer of protection ensures that you have access to the most recent versions of your files at all times.

The Role of the SPIAgent Add-on
The SPIAgent Add-on provides a number of performance enhancing features which make it ideal for remote disaster recovery installations. These features include:

  • TCP/IP communications
  • Real-Time Monitors
  • Adaptive Delta Copies
  • Compression
  • Encryption
  • Quality of Service (QoS)

The TCP/IP based communications offered by the SPIAgent Add-on makes synchronizing files to remote locations simple. You can use any existing TCP/IP connection between the two sites to synchronize files. The only requirement is that the machines can reach each other via an IP address or a DNS name. Even the Internet can be used to synchronize the files. The SPIAgent offers encryption of the data during transfer to ensure data security during transmission over the Internet or another connection.

Each SPIAgent can be provided a different user name and password allowing you to synchronize to machines which are standalone or in different domains. No trust relationships are needed when dealing with multiple domains making the implementation of SureSync in complex network environments painless.

Finally, the SPIAgent provides adaptive delta technology ensuring that only the changed portions of a file are copied which can speed synchronizations and minimize the bandwidth impact of the job.

Recommended Rule Type
Using the correct rule type is essential when dealing with disaster recovery. A one-way rule should be used in this scenario. Recent Master Copy and Differing Mater Copy rules work best. These rules do not delete files from the destination. For example, if a user deletes a file from the source, SureSync will leave the copy out on the disaster recovery destination. This allows the file to be retrieved from the remote machine later. A Mirror rule should be avoided in this particular implementation because it deletes files on the destination that are deleted from the source. In the example above, that file the user deleted would be removed from the destination the next time the SureSync job was run. In a Real-Time Monitor, this would happen right away.

Obviously, a rule type which performs no deletions on the destination can result in some build-up of old files on the remote server. This issue can easily be addressed by running a second Relation on occasion. This Relation should be configured with a Mirror rule. This will make the destination look exactly like the source, including propagating those deletes.

Schedule or Real-Time Monitor?
Valid arguments can be made for both Schedules and Real-Time Monitors for disaster recovery purposes. The correct selection depends on how frequently you want to push updated files out to your disaster recovery machine. For example, if you are handling a critical file share where users update files rapidly, a Real-Time Monitor would be a good choice. This ensures you always have the most recent copy stored remotely. On the other hand, if you are handling large files or files which change less frequently, a Schedule run every hour might be perfectly adequate.

Frequently, a combination of the two types of jobs is optimal. Data which is changed rapidly can be protected with Relations being run with a Real-Time Monitor and data which changes infrequently can be protected with a Schedule. This balances bandwidth usage for all the data transfer with an acceptable time window for getting changes to the disaster recovery server.

Conclusion
SureSync is a powerful compliment to your existing tape backup and drive imaging applications. Using a combination of Real-Time Monitors and Schedules, a network administrator can ensure that critical data is protected, especially between tape backup windows. There is nothing more frustrating than going back to tape and finding that the current version of an important file never made it to the backups. With SureSync running in your environment, that problem will become a thing of the past.

SureSync Does That? - Launch Jobs Using Command Line Functions

You can launch Relations, Schedules, and Real-Time Monitors easily from the command line using SyncCmd. This can be useful in a number of situations. For example, SureSync could be installed on end user laptops with preconfigured Relations defined to backup critical files.  A shortcut can be put on the user’s desktop which would launch the job to backup files to a file server before they leave the office. The command for the shortcut would be something similar to SyncCmd /XStart /R"My Synchronization". See the “SyncCmd” topic in the help for more details.
